24 Lessons for 24 Years

Last Thursday I turned 24 and I realised that I'm definitely not where my younger self had imagined I would be at this age. So, in an attempt to feel less like I have no idea what I'm doing, I thought I would share some reflections on what I have learned in my 24 years (if anything I just need to remember these more often and take my own advice!)

  1. Never stop learning

  2. Being in a job you hate will teach you so much about what you want in life, don't worry that it was a waste of time

  3. If you have that feeling in your gut that something isn't right, believe it

  4. Don't make excuses for people at the cost of your own happiness

  5. Patience is key in every aspect of life

  6. Being compassionate to others is important, but don't let others use that against you

  7. Don't believe everything you see on Instagram, people tend to post highlights and that isn't necessarily their everyday reality

  8. You never know what people might be going through so be kind, always

  9. Sleep is important and it isn't acceptable to say that you 'just don't sleep well' - work on it

  10. Stop comparing yourself to others - comparison is the thief of joy

  11. Life isn't (always) a competition

  12. Just because other people are doing it, doesn't mean that you should want to

  13. As cliché as it is, everyone is living in their own timelines, some people are getting married and having kids and others are still studying, just because you aren't doing all the same things as your friends or the people you see online, it doesn't mean that you're behind or failing

  14. Focus on being happy where you are, while working towards what you want

  15. If you are constantly thinking negative things, negative things will come to you

  16. You don't always have to go to the party but sometimes parties are fun

  17. You don't have to drink to be fun

  18. People will have opinions of you no matter what you do, so you might as well do what makes you happy

  19. It is ok to accept compliments and be proud of your achievements, it doesn't make you arrogant

  20. You will be wrong sometimes and that's ok, apologise if you need to and try to make amends

  21. Being intelligent is attractive and reading is fun

  22. Other people's beauty and success doesn't take away from yours, there is enough to go around

  23. If you're too much for someone or being you intimidates them, they aren't the person for you, you shouldn't have to make yourself small to fit with someone else's ego

  24. People don't notice your insecurities half as much as you think they do

Here's to another year! Can you relate to any of these lessons?
